PRIDE OF GEORGIA – VAKHTANG KIKABIDZE
Sunny Georgia has become the birthplace of many talented people. It was here that poets, musicians, sculptors, filmmakers and other creative personalities became famous all over the world. Vakhtang Kikabidze is among these lucky ones. He is one of the most popular singers and actors of Georgia, he is loved and respected by millions of people on the planet. The performer’s concerts were held on all continents and everywhere full halls greeted him with warmth, gratitude and enthusiasm. It is impossible to confuse or forget Kikabidze’s voice with a “brand-name” hoarse sound after hearing at least one of his many songs.
July 19, 1938 a boy was born in the Kikabidze family in Tbilisi, who was named Vakhtang. Father Konstantin Nikolaevich was a journalist. He is a native of an old Imeretian noble family, and his mother Manana Konstantinovna (from the noble royal dynasty Bagrationi) was a well-known singer in the country, she sang Vakhtang Kikabidze for almost half a century in the choir of the Zion Cathedral. From the age of four, Vakhtang was raised by his mother and uncle, since his father (despite a strong myopia) volunteered for the front and died near Kerch, where he was buried in a mass grave.
Since childhood, the boy was given the nickname Buba, which became his middle name, in Georgia he is called only Buba Kikabidze. At school, he did not differ in diligence and good performance, even three times remained in his second year, because of which he studied for as long as 14 years. As most creative personalities, Vakhtang was given the most difficult sciences. At that time he was passionately passionate about drawing, but paper was sorely lacking, so the child had to draw on newspapers, magazines and even books.
Over time, he experienced a craving for singing. This was facilitated by one of his friends, who invited Vakhtang to a rehearsal of his ensemble. Buba was so carried away by the new occupation that he independently mastered playing the drums and began to sing songs.
Soloist and drummer
After graduating from Tbilisi University in 1959, Kikabidze got a job at the Moscow Philharmonic and began to actively tour. It was great for him to parody foreign pop stars, masterfully performing songs in English and Italian. To improve the pronunciation, Vakhtang Kikabidzeon even entered the Institute of Foreign Languages.
The young singer wanted to move forward. To do this, he creates his ensemble “Dielo”. And although it did not last too long, it was an important experience. In 1966, Kikabidze became a soloist and drummer of the popular VIA Orera. With this collective, he recorded 8 albums, and such hits as “Song of Tbilisi”, “Love is Beautiful” and “Native Land”. Soon in this ensemble of creative personality Vakhtang became crowded, so he decided to start a solo career.
Georgian hawk Vakhtang Kikabidze
The year 1966 became significant in the life of Vakhtang Kikabidze – he made his film debut. A colorful Georgian was noticed during one of the performances and was invited to perform by singer Vakhtang Kikabidzereol in the musical film Meetings in the Mountains. This was a very successful beginning of a film career, and all the following films with the participation of Buba were loved by millions of viewers of the USSR. Fruitful was his collaboration with fellow countryman George Danelia. In 1969, Vakhtang starred in his film “Do not Cry!”, Then there was a picture “Ringtones of the Veriysky Quarter”, but without a doubt, the most prominent career of Vakhtang Kikabidze was the cult film Danelia’s “Mimino”. Since 1977, Kikabidze has been firmly entrenched with the nickname Mimino, which means “hawk” in Georgian.
In cinema, Vakhtang Konstantinovich showed not only his acting talent. In the films “Be healthy, dear” and “Men and all the rest”, he was the author of the script and the director. These paintings are imbued with love of life and amazing Georgian humor, they received several film awards. In total, Vakhtang Kikabidze starred in two dozen films and continues to periodically voice the tape.
While the heart sings
No matter how successful Buba’s path to the cinema was, music for him always remained in the first place. In 1979, he released his first solo disc, “While the Heart Sings,” two years later his second collection, “Wish,” was released. Then one of his most popular songs was the lyric composition of the singer Vakhtang Kikabidze “That’s the whole conversation” (“Two Loneliness”). Vakhtang’s records diverged in considerable editions, and his songs were known and performed not only at home, but throughout the Soviet Union. From the first chords, listeners recognized his rhythmic melodies and texts full of deep meaning, and Kikabidze’s hoarse voice made an indelible impression on them.
The artist has about 20 solo records. It is difficult to determine the most popular composition of Kikabidze, but perhaps the song “My Years – My Wealth” became the hallmark of Buba. Poems to her were written in 1981 by the poet Robert Rozhdestvensky, and the music was composer George Movsesyan. Until now, not a single concert of Vakhtang Konstantinovich and not a single telecast about him is complete without this song.
